Alleged Scheme to Strike Belgian Premier Thwarted

Belgium's Prime Minister the country's leader

Belgium's police have taken into custody three people allegedly involved in plotting an strike on the country's prime minister, Bart de Wever.

Legal authorities described the alleged scheme as a terrorist act motivated by jihadist ideology targeting the premier and other politicians.

During raids conducted in Antwerp's Deurne district, in proximity to the prime minister's private residence, authorities discovered a suspected homemade bomb and evidence that the suspects were intending to employ a unmanned aerial vehicle.

While the planned victims of the attack were not publicly identified by the legal authorities, Second-in-command Maxime Prevot stated that the prime minister was one of them.

"The news of a premeditated strike directed toward PM Bart de Wever is deeply alarming," Prevot stated in a message on online platforms on the day of the arrests.

"It highlights that we are facing a genuine terrorism risk and that we have to keep watchful," he concluded.

The three individuals detained on charges of attempted terrorist murder and involvement in the functions of a jihadist network all reside in Antwerp, according to the prosecutor's office. They were born in three different years between 2001 and 2007.

As of late Thursday, one person was freed, while two others were under interrogation and likely to appear in court on the following day.

Legal authorities said that the individuals were detained after a magistrate authorized raids of their homes in the city by law enforcement assisted by explosive sniffer dogs.

Throughout these raids that they located a device which closely resembled a homemade bomb, legal representative Ann Fransen stated at a media briefing on the day of the events.

Searches also uncovered a container of metal spheres and a additive manufacturing device, with "indications that they intended to use a drone to attach a payload", she continued.

The official said that there had been eighty counter-terrorism cases launched in the country so far this year - surpassing the total number of instances in last year.

During the spring, five individuals were convicted for a 2023 plot to strike De Wever while he was acting as the city's chief executive.
