Former Federal Bureau of Investigation director James the ex-FBI chief has entered an innocent plea to giving untrue testimony to lawmakers and impeding a legislative process.
The former director's lawyer submitted the response representing him in a federal court in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday morning.
His attorney declared he would attempt to have the case dismissed for several causes including that his defendant, a detractor of former President Trump, was being singled out.
James Comey was formally accused just days after the former president pushed his attorney general to take action against him.
In court on mid-week, his attorney Mr Fitzgerald informed the court they planned to submit various motions to throw out the legal matter before a trial, claiming the prosecution was vindictive and that a government lawyer was unlawfully designated to handle the proceedings.
The former director's proceedings was originally handled by a Virginia prosecutor, who stepped down under scrutiny from Trump after his examination into another opponent - the New York official - failed to bring criminal charges.
Mr Comey seemed in optimistic frame of mind as he came into the legal venue on Wednesday, conversing with his legal team and making jokes. He was supported by his wife, Mrs Failor and daughter Maureen, a federal prosecutor who the Trump administration dismissed.
After listening to the court state his constitutional guarantees and the dual charges against him in legal proceedings on mid-week, the defendant was questioned if he grasped the accusations.
"Yes your honour. Thank you very much," he stated to the proceedings.
The former director was the chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 2013 to 2017 and was fired about several months into Donald Trump's first term as commander-in-chief. At the period, he was overseeing an investigation into foreign election meddling and whether there were any connections between the Russian government and Trump's campaign.
During his tenure, James Comey caused a negative reaction from the Democratic party when he announced just shortly prior to the 2016 election that he was probing Democratic candidate the candidate's use of a private email server. Indictments against Hillary Clinton were never brought, leading to disapproval from conservative politicians as well.
The federal government claim the former director lied to the legislature during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in September 2020 when he was being interrogated about both the previous examination as well as the election interference investigation. They allege he provided false information to the upper house by saying he had not approved someone at the Federal Bureau of Investigation to leak to news outlets information about the government examinations.
Prosecutors also allege the defendant of "wrongfully trying to affect, obstruct and slow" the committee by giving misleading testimony to it.
Through a recording the former director posted to his Instagram after he was indicted, he stated he was wrongly accused and charged Trump of behaving like a "dictator".
"We have understood for a long time that there are consequences to challenging Donald Trump," he stated. "We will not live on our bended knee."
"I am not guilty," he added. "Therefore proceed with a court case."
The charges against the former director came after the former president posted on digital channels calling for his chief prosecutor, Pam Bondi, charge the former director and other people.
